Holbox Island, the best secret kept in Mexico, is located on the northern extreme of the Yucatan Peninsula, in Mexico's state of Quintana Roo, and is part of the fauna and flora protection area called "Yum Balam", an ecological reserve. The island, away from civilization, primitive, old fashion and picturesque, is a world where relax, diversion, fishing and the observation of birds and nature can be done as a daily routine. The island is 40 Km large and 2 Km wide and out of these 34 Km are still virgin territories where you can walk on exquisite white sand beaches and search for shells. The tropical climate, the breeze of the sea, good restaurants, and the friendly approach of the people make of Holbox a wonderful place all to discover. Isla Holbox has a very low tourism development but counts with hotels, doctor, pharmacy, restaurants, shops, internet café, boutiques, golf-car rental and very few discotheques. The island does not have any bank but you will be able to change cash Dollars, Euros and Travelers Checks in some shops or internet cafés. Many restaurants and hotels accept credit cards like VISA and MASTERCARD with an extra charge. For the few travelers who did not take enough cash with them there is also a possibility of transferring money by WESTERN UNION and Telegram or going to Kantunilkin, the closest town, and get money at the ATM. How To Arrive There are several ways and roads to arrive from Cancún to Chiquila’ and then to Holbox. You can drive with a taxi, rent a car and drive direction Merida towards Kantunilkin, take a bus or even choose to go by plane. Awaiting for you in Chiquila there are always cheap public boats (from 2 USD per person) leaving almost every hour. Private boats available as well all day long. (More details). Once there ask for one of our team leaders. By feet from the harbor take the fifth street right, keep going till almost the end and then turn right following the signs. Once on Isla Holbox the headquarter of Mextreme Travel operates in the main square of the centre or within the establishment of the hostel Ida y Vuelta Camping, which is located in Calle Plutarco Elias Calles s/n.
